Modelling Open Stopes with Zone Joints

Modelling Open Stopes with Zone Joints

Join us for a presentation demonstrating the power of the latest FLAC3D zone joint capabilities.

For this webinar, a numerical model of a large open stope, located approximately 1500 meters below surface, in a complex geological environment is assessed. The stope is situated within a blocky rock mass intersected by dense structural features, particularly in the hanging wall, which pose significant challenges to ground support performance.

This approach is suitable for capturing both structural and stress overbreak, as well as the impact of support in controlling overbreak.

Key highlights include:

  • Application of zone joints in FLAC3D to realistically represent structural complexity—offering an alternative to 3DEC for similar scenarios.
  • Use of the IMASS strain-softening model to simulate rock mass degradation and post-peak behavior.
  • Simulation of cable bolt support, including monitoring of axial forces during and after excavation.
  • Insights into the interaction between excavation geometry, rock structure, and support systems at depth.

This webinar is ideal for geomechanics professionals, numerical modelling specialists, researchers, and anyone interested in advanced numerical modeling for underground mine design and stability analysis.
