Itasca welcomes ARMA to Minneapolis

Itasca Major Sponsor and Contributor
to ARMA Conference

Minneapolis, MN (May 28, 2014) Minneapolis will be the host city for the 48th US Rock Mechanics / Geomechanics Symposium (ARMA) held from June 1-4, 2014 on the University of Minnesota (West Bank) campus. Itasca is enthusiastic about the opportunity to welcome ARMA registrants to its headquarter city and looks forward to a full schedule of events surrounding rock mechanics topics, workshops and tours of the area.

Itasca is a major sponsor of the ARMA event with several staff members on the conference organizing committee. We are hosting the reception before the banquet on Tuesday evening and also have provided the conference bags for attendees. Itasca, along with MTS Systems and the University of Minnesota, will host a Wednesday evening dinner/reception with a presentation on the “Evolution of Rock Mechanics.” Professor Charles Fairhurst, Dr. Peter Cundall and Dean Steve Crouch will be honored for their outstanding contributions to this field.

The day before the conference opens, on May 31, Dr. Lee Petersen, a graduate of the Geoengineering Program at the University of Minnesota, will lead a tour of the Soudan Mine from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Dr. Petersen will provide a wealth of information on the mining history of Minnesota’s Iron Range and the cavernous underground high-energy physics lab situated there.

Technical contributions by Itasca will commence on Sunday morning, June 1, when Drs. Azadeh Riahi, Branko Damjanac and Will Pettitt will host a full-day workshop on geothermal energy entitled, “The Role of Geomechanics in Geothermal Reservoirs Engineering.” This workshop will take place at the conference hotel, The Commons, at 615 Washington Avenue S.E., Minneapolis, MN from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

During the conference, a wide range of keynote speeches and technical papers will be presented by Itascans. For a complete list and times, please see our website at

We invite everyone attending the conference to visit our booth, #4, to meet both engineering consultants and software managers to discuss opportunities to work together. We would love to meet you and find out more about what you would like to get out of the conference. Please also stop by Booth #3, another Itasca booth that will be introducing a new initiative for oil and gas, IMaGE, and the IMaGE President, Dr. Shawn Maxwell for the first time at ARMA.
